The 10th Annual Media That Matters Film Festival just opened its call for entries with a deadline of January 22. With community screenings throughout the world for one year and a constantly-streaming online festival of the films that are chosen by a jury to be part of the fest, it's a chance for work by young filmmakers to get some really great exposure. In 2010, Arts Engine, the creator of the festival, will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of presenting this premiere showcase for "short films with big messages." Your audience will consist of hundreds of thousands of educators, activists and nonprofit organizations and they, in turn, will use this collection of films for their own outreach work. It's one of the most successful distribution scenarios out there and now is your chance to be a part of that.
Finished films should not have a longer running time than 12 minutes, with an ideal running time of between 8 and 10 minutes. The array of issues is very broad and this year, they are focusing on media literacy, human rights, LGBTQ issues and sexual identity, youth activism and international affairs. You can submit works of nonfiction, animation, a PSA, a fiction story (drama or comedy), a music video or any combination thereof--they are looking for creative and innovative messaging. And, oh yeah, it should be entertaining, too. Check the website for more details and the application form. You can also watch collections from previous years. Good luck!
